Cover Design Template

The title we had chosen was 'Florida Adventures' from a brainstorming session, and while we were in a deep thought we had decided that when we go fishing it is an adventure. Since we live in Florida, we decided to call it Florida adventure, as the magazine covers activities and adventures in Florida. After many hours of collecting inspiration of looking at other fishing magazines, we decided to follow a bold italic layout with black, white, and yellow text distributing the engagement of the reader.

The photo used on the cover of the magazine was taken off shore in the Golf of Mexico, over a coral reef. The fish caught was a tarpon, caught with live bait. The Golf of Mexico is a wonderful place to fish, as it is home to thousands of different marine species.  

This photo was taken at shell beach docks, of a friend who had caught a snook. 

The photo above was taken in a canal in siesta key, around ten o'clock. The student is holding about a fifteen pound snook.

Magazine flat plan

Throughout the process of making the flat plan, it took a lot of communication and thinking to figure out the articles we wanted to cover, as well as the ads to interpret. In total we have 24 ads that vary from fishing to diving gear or objects we felt others may need. The ads are also objects on sale that you can order or go to the store listed to get it. The article its self mainly covers fishing, the different types of fish, fishing activities. In the middle of the magazine we have a couple articles that cover diving, scalloping and lobster hunting. After that, we had gone back to fishing  articles. We included personal fishing stories, fishing technologies others can use, and safety. It had taken a couple days to figure out what we had wanted to cover, so after we figured that out I started working on the flat plan. While working on it, I made sure he was okay with the sections we were covering and asked where he would like them to be. Overall, this portion of the project took a lot of communication. 

Magazine Research

The magazine "Rig Weedless Baits Saltwater Sportsman" is an outdoors fishing magazine that allows the audience to learn about great places to go fishing for the best fishes. The cover shows a shot of a Mahi Mahi getting reeled in, and the lure covered in some seaweed in the middle right side of the magazine. They use yellow, black and white for the title. They use the word 'Saltwater' in a large white font to let the readers know that this magazine is about saltwater fish. They do the subtitles in a medium black font on both the left and right of the mahi mahi. They took the picture of the mahi mahi in the Bahamas. The subtitles are about vacations away to fish, 'Summer Getaways' allowing the reader to know they will have a page telling the best places to go during the summer to fish. They have not won any awards or nominations. 

Magazine Research

The magazine "Modern Fishing" is an outdoors magazine that focus's on fishing. It gives the readers tips to use while fishing, and the 'kings' of the ocean. They stay with the salt water fishes to show the different fishes caught, and the different types of bait used. The cover has a picture of a man holding a red drum he had caught. The title is a large white font to draw attention to it. The cover also contains the month and the year the magazine was published. Then for the sub-titles, they put them to the left of the fish going to and from white and orange. The orange font it large; where as the white font is located under the orange font and it small. It tells the reader they will be reading about lures, the reel's drag, dogtooth tuna and other reef fish while fly fishing. The company that own's this magazine has earned the reputation of the 'Hot Spot', and has been reviewed as one of the best fishing experiences in the world. 

Project Selection- My Decision

Magazine

I have decided and chose to do the magazine because I feel it would be more fun to work on the magazine with my partner, as we are doing it on fishing. Which allows us to actually go out fishing first hand to take pictures and gather information. This will also help me understand the amount of work and time it takes for one single magazine. The skills that I posses for this particular task, is that I love going outdoors and fishing in general. I am working with Ben Kroneberger on this project. He as well loves to go fishing, and being outdoors. The classified genre for this magazine will be outdoors.Throughout this project, we will be working a lot together outside of school fishing in different areas of Sarasota Florida. We will include weather, fishing charts, personal stories, and Fishing/Hunting advertisements.  We will have an index allowing the readers to know where all the information and or stories are located. There will be no specified roles, as we can work together to input each others opinions easier. Since we are also in class together we are able to work on the project in class if we think we are able to add anything to the magazine in that time. 

Project Selection- Film

Film Production

Some aspects of film production that may interest me would have to directing the film and helping the actors out. Since I am in JROTC i have a variety of leadership values that could come into play while directing. I feel directing would be easier for me, as i hate being on camera. I'm shy on camera, but very outgoing around my friends and family. In class we watched the film "Ferris Bueller" and I learned about the issues directors have while casting roles, and issues the actors may cause, as well as the wardrobe. However, you have to be able to separate the people from the problem in order to solve the issue at hand. I feel as a director I would be able to make the making of it fun when possible, and serious when needed to be. It would be a good fit for me because I love to be around others and just mess around and have fun. Especially in films because the bloopers are hilarious when we go back and look at it. I also feel it would be more satisfying to see the final production of the film than the magazine, as it takes so much to make and direct a film. I think the only challenge I would have for this project, is going on camera. I absolutely hate being on camera, or in videos.

Print Journalism

The aspects of journalism I feel i would enjoy the most is gathering the information on stories and finding multiple sources to confirm the story is correct. I am a very organized person, so i would love to do the layouts of the magazine while my other partners may get the information for their part of the project. However, my weak points are that I do not read magazines and I do not know much of any drama going around in the media business. I mainly pay attention to sports, so i would either have to do this project on my own or find others that are interested in doing a magazine on sports. I would like to be able to sit down at a table and discuss the stories we have and how credible they are, like in the TV show "HBO Newsroom". The most challenging issue I may have is finding time to meet up with the others to provide help in the project as I have work and games outside of school hours. Another challenge might be interpreting everyone's desires into the magazine, as some topics are not as credible or important as another one may be. In "HBO Newsroom" Will and the EP would discuss the topics they want to cover on that night and i feel like in my group, that would work better as well so we know what sources to find and figure out on our own which one is the most credible for each section.
